19 October 2004 The radical animal welfare organisation People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is preparing to announce more boycotts of Australian wool by United States garment retailers. Speaking to Rural Press from the United States this week, PETA spokesman Matt Rice said there were to be more retailers to join the ban in coming weeks. "We have been speaking to about two dozen retailers across the US and there will be more joining the ban in November," he said. Wool processors have spoken of the potential damage the latest animal welfare campaign could have on the entire wool industry. Last week, US garment retailer Abercrombie and Fitch announced a ban on Australian wool in its 749 stores after pressure from PETA about mulesing and live exporting by the Australian sheep industry.
