Gene plan no benefit to woolgrowers -
22 December 2003

The Australian Woolgrowers Association says a plan to eliminate the gene for black sheep will not benefit woolgrowers.

The CSIRO and the sheep industry's Co-operative Research Centre are asking producers to send in DNA samples from their sheep, to help identify the gene.

But Association chairman Will Crozier says the money would be better spent elsewhere.

"With the flood of exotic breeds into the country, people just aren't worried about the odd black sheep running around in a merino flock. You know that money, in my view, could be better spent in a marketing or promotional sense, or indeed trying to get more innovative products for the white wool that we grow. By eliminating that it's not going to put one extra dollar in our pockets."
