Wool Poll 2003 Crucial to Wool Future Directions
3 October 2003

The forthcoming Wool Poll 2003 presents an opportunity for woolgrowers right across Australia to have a say on the future of their industry.

AWGA Chairman, Mr Will Crozier, believes this ballot provides the industry as a whole, with the power to determine the future of wool industry bodies, such as AWI and the Woolmark Company.

Woolgrowers need to ask themselves “how wool growers funds should be spent on research and development, whether it should be on farm research or off farm research, whether any wool tax or levy funds should be spent on marketing and promotion, and indeed should this compulsory levy generate a return on investment in providing a fully commercial dividend,” states Mr Crozier.

In light of the feedback from many growers, the AWGA, believe there is considerable concern over the current performance of Australian Wool Innovation, the lack of commercial development and the ongoing request for continual grower funds.

Equally, there is considerable support to redirect some funding into the marketing and promotion of new markets.

Woolgrowers are aware of the need to streamline the processing pipeline for wool to make it more affordable, at the same time develop, and market new uses for wool.

”Many of our members are concerned that the current R&D regime is not addressing this simple fact of life,” states Mr Crozier.

“It is crucial that woolgrowers stand up and ensure that their vote is counted at the forthcoming Wool Poll Ballot,” affirms AWGA.

“Apathy has ruled the wool industry for too long…If as a woolgrower you are concerned about how your wool tax levy money is been used, now is the time to have your say” concludes Mr Crozier.
