Wool industry statement.

I am proud to be elected to the AWGA board. AWGA offers woolgrowers a “clean” voice to government and the industry, offering a grass roots voice as a democratic national body. It is important that Western Australia is represented at a national level, because merino wool production is vital to this state and must be represented effectively.

I am concerned about the current industry levy and how it is being spent. The levy must become more focused towards real demand building strategies.

The proposed merger between AWI and AWS is complicated and will require a major overhaul of the current spending regime. The new company must have a structure in place that ensures money raised for marketing by the levy doesn’t find its way back into current R&D expenditure programs that deliver very little wealth for our industry.

I believe in merino wool, and have opted to become involved in the current debate as to where our industry is heading. I believe we have a future, but only if our levy money is directed into marketing and sales programs that will ultimately lift the price of our farm gate wool cheque.

WA needs more voices at a national wool level, and I am proud to serve my state on the national board of the Australian Wool Growers Association.

Yours truly,

Shane Edwards ( WA )
Director
AWGA
